It’s important to have your movers ready to transport your belongings on the official day of your move, but it’s also important that certain necessary steps are complete before finally accepting your quote and booking the movers.
In this article, I’m going to explain the best time to book a removal company and the other steps you should have in place before reserving your slot.
The best time to book a removal company is around 4-6 weeks before your official move-in date. This gives you enough time to shop around for the best quote while also having the time to prepare your belongings in advance, complete your home survey and finalise any extra details specific to your move.
That being said, 4-6 weeks is just a rough guide - those with smaller homes or flats might not need to wait as long, while those moving from much larger houses (with more objects and belongings to transport) might want to start shopping around for a quote at least a couple of months in advance. This is because you want to ensure that you’re getting the best deal possible, so if you require a large removal team, you want to ensure they’ll be available for your chosen dates. You don’t want to be stuck last-minute with a hefty price tag because all the cheaper alternatives are booked up.
It’s best to wait until you’ve officially exchanged your contract before booking your removal company. Many removal companies won’t offer a full refund in the event that your plans change, so it’s best to wait it out and get the documents signed and exchanged before booking.
That being said, you should still search around for a quote during this time, especially if you have lots of objects to transport. Busy periods (such as weekends and the summer holidays) will book up fast, so you should start looking as soon as you have dates or a provisional date.
A good time to get a removal quote is around 3 months before your move - this way, you can get a rough idea of what your costs will incur, as well as the availability of removal companies in your area.
Don’t worry if you don’t know what dates you’ll be moving yet - most home removal companies will be happy to give you a quote based on provisional dates, provided that the circumstances surrounding the move aren’t going to change.
